Description of Position

 

This is a home/office-based position, with flexible hours, responsible for taking calls on demand and interpreting between [Target Language] and English language speakers. The interpreter will be expected to facilitate communication in a wide variety of sectors, including education, financial services, business, legal services, healthcare, and emergency services. The position is for verbal interpretation and does not involve translation of written documents. This is an entry-level position, and previous interpretation experience is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

 

Initial requirements 

 

  • Government- issue ID and SSN
  • Work permit

 

Education

 

  • High school diploma or GED (Required)

 

  • Associates Degree or above (preferred)

 

 

Languages/Cultural contextualization

 

 

  • English – Fluent (Required)

 

  • Other Language – Fluent (Required)

 

 

Ability to understand a wide range of accents, idiomatic phrases, and cultural references.

 

 

Skills required

 

 

  • Interpretation – ability to interpret between a Target Language and English in a quick and accurate manner

 

 

  • Strong Short-term memory – ability to remember and repeat detailed aspects of an ongoing English/Target Language conversation (names, places, dates, etc.)

 

 

  • Rapid Note-taking – ability to quickly write or type information from an ongoing English/Target Language conversation

 

 

  • Empathy and Professionalism - ability to handle delicate topics with care.

 

Technical and logistical requirements

 

Personal device with capacity to run the latest versions of their operating systems  (Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS are acceptable), including one of the following:

 

  • Desktop /Laptop Computers (preferred)
  • Tablets and iPads will not be sufficient
  • Smartphones with the latest operating system are acceptable

 

Digital literacy - Ability to use online scheduling and communications applications (Teams, Zoom etc)
